In Lienz where AdventureAustria is based, there are plenty of cross country skiing routes to choose from. In fact Lienz has 64km of dedicated cross country tracks and the whole of East Tyrol has nearly 400km. Cross country skiing in East Tyrol is an absolute must for any fan of this fascinating winter sport. Cross country skiing is also known as Langlauf or Nordic skiing.

Eldorado for cross country skiers

Straight through the fields and the forests, over the hills and through the valleys – the East Tyrolean countryside offers countless possibilities for enthusiastic cross country skiers regardless if you are a beginner or a professional. Nearly 400km of cross country routes in East Tyrol await you!

Untouched countryside

East Tyrol offers many different valleys along with wonderful countryside for fans of winter sport. Whilst you are breathing in the cold crisp air, you can enjoy the quietness and wonderful nature surrounding you. In East Tyrol you’ll find more demanding tracks located close together with easier tracks so there is plenty to do for everyone.


Whoever has been cross country skiing in Hochpustertal, will rave about it for a long time after. A total of 120km or prepared cross country routes make this a real gem. There are also natural places of interest including the Pragser Wildsee located to the south of Hochpustertal. In Toblach there is an annual International World Cup race over 120km to test the best cross country skiers in the world.


Defereggental also offers many possibilities for cross country skiers. At the 2,000m Staller Sattel is a high, panoramic circuit with amazing views of the Antholzertal and surrounding peaks. Sun lovers will particularly enjoy the circuit and for those that haven’t had enough during the day can also go cross country skiing in the evening on the 3km floodlit Deferegger circuit of St. Jakob.

The cross country ski event in East Tyrol

For 40 years the Dolomitenlauf is a big winter event in East Tyrol. Each year more and more international athletes take part in two disciplines competing in the wonderful surroundings of Obertilliach. Entrants include Olympic Champions as well as local matadors and hobby skiers. Obertilliach, located south of Lienz is the biathlon cross country high point.

Enjoy the East Tyrol hospitality in a mountain hut and warm up with a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate before you get back onto your skies. Many wonderful specialities are served in the countless mountain huts along the way.
