Christmas and Advent time in Lienz
The days are getting shorter and the temperatures drop, the scent of the first freshly baked Christmas biscuits and distinctive aroma of mulled wine are in the air and snow that was once only on the mountains begins to find its way down to the valleys… winter time in Lienz begins with the charming time of Advent.
In Lienz where AdventureAustria is based, Advent time starts at the end of November (29th November in 2014). The opening is found on the Lienz main square in the form of a Christmas Market. Lovingly decorated candlelit stalls, small campfires, the smell of freshly baked Christmas biscuits and cakes, mulled wine, rum teas and merry Christmas tunes fill the the Lienz main square with Christmas nostalgia as it is transformed into a festive Christmas paradise. Many gift ideas including beautiful handmade Christmas decorations, native crafts, candles and typical snacks make the Advent market a contemplative meeting place for young and old.
In the living workshop various craftsmen and women demonstrate their skills whilst in the town hall an exhibition of nativity scenes can be admired. During the daytime, a small skating rink is available for children and during the evening between 7pm and 9pm “Lattl-shooting” is played – an old fashioned form of ice stock sport.
A special highlight of the Lienz Advent time is the amazing Advent calendar on the Lienz Liebburg building. Twenty four local artists each paint a work of art which is revealed behind each of the twenty four windows daily at 6.30pm in the conjunction with lovely Christmas music played by traditional local bands.
Each evening small bonfires are lit and the smell of burning wood lingers in the air. On cold days you can warm up around the fires with a glass of hot punch or mulled wine.

Another spectacular highlight of the Advent season is in early December. The Krampus, which follows centuries of tradition, is where young men hide behind ornate hand-carved masks, wrap themselves in thick, shaggy furs and decorate themselves with deafening cow bells. They can be seen in large numbers in a procession which can only be described as not for the faint hearted! The Krampus processions take place in Lienz and the surrounding villages between 3rd and 6th December. This is a great experience for the whole family.
The ski season also begins on the first weekend of December where the ski lifts of Zettersfeld and Hochstein open their doors and the first skiers and hikers leave their tracks in the virginal white snow.
Imagine an active holiday where you spend the morning doing some turns in the snow, a lunch stop to recharge yourself in one of the mountain huts serving delicious local specialties, an afternoon soothing aches and pains in a spa with sauna and massage and in the evening a romantic stroll through the Lienz Christmas Market … for this time of year we have the right holiday offer for you!
Christmas day is celebrated on the evening of the 24th of December in Austria and is the day on which the gifts are put under the Christmas tree. Christmas in Lienz could be described as the following: fresh snow and bitterly cold outside, the crackling of the fireplace, sitting together with the family and enjoy a delicious meal, joyful eyes opening Christmas gifts on the decorated Christmas trees, atmospheric Christmas music, Christmas poems and the beautiful view of the Alps and the snowy Lienz Dolomite mountains.
The New Year is celebrated in style in Lienz. Almost all hotels and restaurants have dance and music evenings and special gala dinners to welcome the New Year in. At midnight, the New Year is welcomed with a huge fireworks display. Here you have some perfect viewing points to watch the fireworks both in the city and further up the mountain – with the backdrop of the Lienz Dolomites. New Year’s Day can be started with a leisurely late “hangover breakfast” followed by some skiing, hiking or tobogganing on the snowy mountains…
