Family summer holidays to Austria

Are you searching for a perfect summer holiday destination for you and your family? Somewhere where the whole family can have fun, get plenty of action and spend some time relaxing all at the same time?

We believe a family summer holiday to Austria to be the perfect solution!

The Dolomite town of Lienz in the East Tyrol region of Austria, where AdventureAustria is based, is perfect for a family summer holiday and here’s why…

Quick introduction

East Tyrol is situated on the south side of the Austrian Alps and guests can expect breathtaking mountain scenery with practically untouched nature all around. Lienz is the capital town of East Tyrol and has just 12,000 inhabitants. It is situated at 673m above sea level and is just 20km to the Italian border and the Italian Dolomites.

Lienz is officially the ‘sunniest’ town in Austria with an average of 2,000 hours of sunshine each year. It is often referred to as ‘Die Sonnenstadt’ – sunny city. This is also a great reason for you and your family to visit regardless of what time of the year you are visiting.

In Lienz itself you won’t find busloads of tourists and cheap souvenir shops. Instead you’ll find a lively town centre with friendly locals. In Lienz everyone is welcome! The countless street cafes and bakeries make for a nice place to stop and rest and to enjoy an Italian coffee or homemade pastry. In the restaurants guests can enjoy typical Austrian and Tyrolean specialities such as Tirolerknödel, Schlipfkrapfen, Brettljause, Wienerschnitzel, Kaiserschmarren and apple strudel.

For those that want to shop Lienz offers a very sophisticated shopping experience with dozens of shops, boutiques and fashion stores. All this in fresh mountain air with the breathtaking backdrop of the Lienz Dolomite Mountains. In fact it doesn’t matter where you are in the town centre, one look around and you’ll soon be reminded by the mountain scenery that you’re somewhere special.

It’s often the small touches that make Lienz so enchanting. The small colourful buildings in the old town with balconies decorated full with blooming flowers, or the Mediterranean plants, cactuses and palm trees. Here you can feel a certain ‘southern flair’ with strong influences from neighbouring Italy. In fact the town’s latest campaign for tourism is proudly called ‘Lienz – the south begins here’. The only thing missing is the sea and beach itself!

Lienz is an incredibly clean and safe town for all the family. You can be sure to walk around the streets of Lienz anytime of the day or night and know that you’ll be safe and secure. Criminality here is virtually non-existent.

For small children there are many parks with play areas. On the Hochstein Mountain at the Moosalm there is a children’s adventure playground as well as a small petting zoo, ideal for the little ones. Also the new water park at the Galitzenklamm has plenty to keep children occupied with its water fountains, stones and wooden obstacles. Parents can relax here in the adjacent restaurant whilst the kids cool down – a great tip for a family day out.

Family summer holidays in Lienz and East Tyrol

The Austrian Alps in general and particularly Lienz and the East Tyrol region are a paradise for sports and the great outdoors with plenty of adventures to choose from. The great thing about Lienz is that there are many different activities located very close to each other. This is practical and convenient especially if you are holidaying with a family. Lienz also makes for an excellent base to explore this part of Austria with daytrips and excursions to some incredible places such as the Grossglockner, the Dolomites in Italy and magical Venice. The neighbouring states of North Tirol, Salzburg, Carinthia and South Tyrol can also be explored.

For families with children it’s good to know that many activities are suitable for children – even small ones. On Hochstein Mountain and Zettersfeld Mountain there are some very easy and suitable walking routes where the whole family can experience the full splendour of the surrounding mountains and 2,300m above sea level! Even at the previous mentioned kids adventure park, children as young as 2 ½ can enjoy some of the obstacles and activities.

Another huge attraction in Lienz is the Drauweg Cycle Path. This cycle path follows the Drau River from Toblach in Italy through Austria and into Slovenia. The main family attraction here is the Innichen to Lienz section. This path is 47km long and is practically downhill the whole way. Guests take a one-way train from Lienz to Innichen in Italy where they pick up a bicycle and cycle downhill back to Lienz. All this on a cycle path away from roads and traffic. It’s not hard to see why this day out has developed into such a big attraction for families.

And what family holiday would be complete without swimming? In Lienz and East Tyrol there are dozens of outdoor swimming pools to choose from. In Lienz there is the largest outdoor swim centre called the Dolomitenbad as well as the wonderfully romantic Tristachersee bathing lake where families can easily spend a day relaxing with water temperatures reaching a pleasant 24 degrees. This is the next best thing to a beach and sea!

Other great fun activities that families can do together include rafting, horse riding, archery, llama trekking, alpine coaster, climbing, cycling, tennis and minigolf.
