Top 5 things to do in Lower Austria

1. Whisky world Roggenreith

2. National Park Donau – Auen

3. Baden

4. Eibl Jet

5. Bergbahnen Mitterbach

1. Whiskyerlebniswelt Roggenreith

In the Roggenreith in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria is Austria’s number one address for whisky. The whisky world lets guests experience this tipple in every way possible.  The number one whisky distillery in Austria has specialised in producing rye whisky.  In their very own cinema visitors can learn how this alcoholic delicacy is produced and glass walls into the distillery itself give a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the distillery.  Of course it’s also possible to have a taste of the Waldviertel whisky too!

2. National Park Donau – Auen

The protected national park of Donau-Auen lies between Vienna and Bratislava.  Highlights include water features and waterfalls, an underwater viewing area as well as guided tours of Orth Castle.  An interactive multimedia presentation is also available for visitors wanting to learn more about the park.

3. Baden

The historic town of Baden close to Vienna is well known all over Austria as the one-time summer residence of the former Emperor of Austria as well as a city with a rich tradition in garden culture.  For example the Baden rose garden with over 20,000 rose bushes including 600 different varieties offers garden culture of the highest niveau.

The park with its own botanical plants and colourful flowers offer an impressive view over the town.  The nostalgic park café itself also offers historical flair as does the Beethoven temple, music pavilion and various historical statues.

4. The Eibl Jet

The Eible Jet is Lower Austria’s most modern and spectacular alpine coaster.  The 1,007m long coaster is open all year and in all types of weather.  The track takes you down steep twists and turns, waves and jumps. The Eibl is located on the house mountain of Türnitz which is also a great destination for hiking and exploration, for example the romantic Falcon Canyon or on the mountain summit itself.

5. Bergbahnen Mitterbach – Ski lift of Mitterbach

The 1,626m high Gemeinde Alpen Mountains near Mitterbach are an outdoor paradise.  Two modern chairlifts take visitors from Mitterbach to the peaks of the Gemeindealpe where you are guaranteed a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains.  Close to the peak is the Terzerhaus – a small cosy mountain lodge offering hot food and overnight accommodation.  Wonderful hikes are possible throughout the Ötschergräben.  For the return journey it is also possible to take a short cut from the middle station with a so-called mountain cart – which have extra wide tyres – perfect for the 5km downhill gravel path back to Mitterbach.
