In the middle of June each year the magical event of ‘Herz Jesu Feuer Fest’ can be found in the regions of East, North, West and South Tyrol.
The event which took place in Lienz on 16th June last year was spectacular and was made even better by perfect, clear weather conditions.
As night time falls and the sun disappears, small torchlight fires can be seen all over the mountain peaks giving an amazing visual silhouette of the surrounding mountains including the Lienzer Dolomite Mountains.
As well as an estimated 2,500 torchlight fires on the peaks, there are also an array of shapes including crosses and hearts, shaped in the darkness with pinpoint accuracy for the spectators below.
The tradition began as far back as 1796, when North and South Tyroleans prayed to Jesus to protect their land against the Napoleon troupes and swore to remember it every year in this way. ‘Herz Jesu Feuer Fest’ literally translates to ‘Fires for the Heart of Jesus’.
Today the display is put on by local members of the community including voluntary workers from the surrounding local mountain rescue teams.
The evening gives a magical and unique atmosphere just once a year and astounds locals and visitors alike.
