Do you already have holiday plans for the summer? Maybe we could help you make a decision…
Lienz in East Tyrol (where AdventureAustria is based) not only attracts visitors with its fantastic scenery and opportunities to discover great outdoor activities, but also with some brilliant and unique summer events.
Here are just a few of the summer events in Lienz and highlights for you:
Dolomiten cycle race
On the 8th of June the 27th Dolomiten cycling tour will take place in Lienz. This cycling competition is suitable for both professionals and amateurs alike. The competition starts on the Lienz main square before heading off on a journey through the beautiful landscape of the Lienz Dolomites covering a distance of 112km. Also premiering this year is the “Super Giro Dolomiti” competition. This is an extreme variant of the Dolomiten cycling race with 5,000 meters of altitude and covers a total distance of 232km. The route connects East Tyrol, Carinthia and Italy and is guaranteed to be a huge sporting challenge.
OLALA street theatre festival
Another great event in Lienz and certainly one of the highlights of the summer is the OLALA street theatre festival which takes place from the 29th of July until the 2nd of August. For the 23rd consecutive year, Lienz transforms itself into a huge open air theatre stage with International acts taking place in the streets and squares of Lienz. Spanning 5 days visiting guests can dive into a multi-faceted world of dance, art, music, magic, comedy, acrobatics, oblique mini theatre and just plain weird!
Red Bull Dolomitenmann
The Red Bull Dolomitenmann competition claims to be “the toughest team competition in the world”. 2014 sees this extreme team competition taking place for the 27th year running. Taking place on the 6th of September this year athletes will be competing in a relay race which includes the disciplines of mountain running, paragliding, mountain biking and white water kayaking. The start is at 10am on the main square in Lienz and the first finishers will return back to the main square roughly four hours later. There are many viewing opportunities for spectators to watch the race as well as many side events including live music and air displays taking place over the whole weekend.
There are also plenty of less spectacular events in Lienz taking place which should also not be missed. For example, on the 10th of May at 8pm in the city hall in Lienz, the works of Beethoven, Brahms and Sibelius can be heard at the Lienz Classical Spring Concert. And on the 28th of May there is an open-air concert on the Lienz main square featuring the classical Orchestra School of Music.
During July and August, every Sunday and Wednesday evening, live music performances can be seen and heard in Lienz. Different bands with various genres can be seen live on stage on the main square in Lienz. Expect to hear anything from traditional folk music to modern Rock n Roll!
Classic car rally
On the 31st of May the Dölsach Car Rally takes place. The route goes from Dölsach to Lavant, Tristach Amlach, Lienz and Nußdorf Debant. Only vehicles built before 1984 can take part. Great fun for all the family.
Alpine rose festival
On the 13th and 14th of June this year the ‘Almrosenfest’ will be held in St. Jakob in East Tyrol. In the month of June, the Alpine roses bloom and provide a magnificent floral spectacle. In St. Jakob this is celebrated with different displays along with a diverse side programme for children and families. Delicious local food as well as international specialities are also on offer.
Herz Jesu Feuer (Sacred Heart Fire)
Each year on the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost is the religious Feast of the Sacred Heart. During the evening, there is the so-called ‘Sacred Heart fire’ event.
This year’s spectacle will take place on the 28th of June and the mountains around East Tyrol will be lit up with over 2,500 mountain fires and Christian symbols. The preparations for the mountain fires begin many weeks in advance. The wood used to burn the fires is carried up the mountains by hand and the painstaking work of the different symbols must be carefully measured out. The whole spectacle is performed free of charge from private groups and societies.
Originally, the mountain fires were used as an alarm signal – at the time of the Tyrolean freedom fights in 1809 as the men were called for, for the uprising against the advancing French. Today, these fires are an annual tradition and have slightly religious tones.
On the 7th of May the annual Dragon Boat Race is held on the alpine lake at St. Jakob. Decorated boats accompanied by drumbeats race over the ‘Obersee’ lake at an altitude of 2,016 meters above sea level. The 12.5m long boats come complete with a dragon head and dragon tail!
From the 8th to the 10th of August, the annual pottery market event takes place on the Lienz main square. For 3 days various potters and artists offer their handmade works for sale and invite you to stroll and be amazed by their craftsmanship.
From 12th to 14th September guests can visit and watch the Solo Free Climbing Championships. Some of the world’s best climbers will be fighting it out on a 5m wide and 16m high wall for the world championship title.
