Carinthia (Kärnten in German) is the state with the most lakes and mountains in Austria. Together with neighbouring Italy and Slovenia, it is known as the ‘Three Countries Corner.’ Due to the different terrain, there is a division into ‘Upper Carinthia’ and ‘Lower Carinthia.’ Carinthia’s capital city Klagenfurt is located in the south between the Central Austrian Alps and the Karawanken Mountains.
To the west is the ‘Wörthersee’ lake. This lake along with numerous others is the centre of summer tourism in Carinthia. The state of Carinthia has many wonderful valleys traversing it and as the southernmost region of Austria, it enjoys a temperature and climate similar to that of Central Europe.
The airport is located in the state capital Klagenfurt.
Direct flights with the airline German Wings can be found to cities such as Cologne, Bonn, Berlin and Hamburg. There are also direct flights to Austria’s capital city Vienna. From the airport, the city centre can be reached by bus or taxi and takes just 15 minutes.
Klagenfurt is a small airport and visitors may find better flights and connections to the following nearby airports

Graz, Austria Airport (1 hour 30 mins drive)
Salzburg, Austria Airport (approximately 2 hours’ drive)

From Klagenfurt airport, there are several transfers to the various regions of Carinthia. In addition to the regional transfers, the following bus connections are available:

The Kärnten Card offers free entry to over 100 of the most popular sights and attractions in Carinthia. The card is available for purchase from April to October and attractions can be visited as often as desired. The Kärnten Card is obtained at many outlets across Carinthia – such as tourist offices. Some hotels even offer guests a Kärnten Card for the duration of their stay, completely free of charge.
City of Klagenfurt
In addition to wide variety of events, the city of Klagenfurt offers visitors a top choice of events, exhibitions, theatre and concerts. In summer the city invites you to a leisurely shop tour with a stop in a small old town café.

The Nassfeld ski area is located right on the Austrian-Italian border. On offer is 30 modern cable cars and lifts as well as 110 km snow-sure pistes for all levels. In addition, you can expect the Millennium Express, the longest cable car in the Alps. It takes about 17 minutes for the 6,000 m long track of the Gail Valley the ski area.
The regions Weissbriach, Lake Weissensee and in Kötschach-Mauthen are ideal for holidays with children. Here you have nearly 300 kilometers of well-groomed, snow-covered trails available. At the Lake ‘Weissensee’ you have one of the largest natural ice skating rinks in Europe.
This is a paradise for ice skating enthusiasts which literally attracts 1,000’s of visitors every day! If you like you can play hockey, go ice curling or even play ice-golf!
On the beautiful Lake Millstätt, alpine hikers can expect to find ruby gems often only hidden by slate. In the region there is an abundance of rare stones and mountain crystals. Enjoy the unique turquoise colour of Lake Faak (Faaker See), the many sports facilities on Lake Ossiach (Ossiacher See) and the charm of one of the many smaller lakes such as the Afritzer lake (Afritzer See).
The Dobratsch Nature Park offers holidaymakers different climate zones in a small space in particular for the animal and plant world. Guests visiting Dobratsch are able to observe nature and wildlife up close and personal.
